BIOME 8: Where Community, Science, Faith, and Conservation Meet!

Virac, Catanduanes – The picturesque island of Virac, Catanduanes, is set to host the 8th BIOME Biodiversity National Convention from July 31 to August 2. This year’s event, themed “BIOME 8: Where COMMUNITY, SCIENCE, FAITH, and CONSERVATION MEET,” promises a rich program of insightful presentations, collaborative discussions, and groundbreaking research dissemination.

The convention will bring together esteemed experts to share their knowledge and insights on various topics:
Incorporating Laudato Si into Environmental Science Initiatives
Rev. Fr. Josue Escalona Jr. will examine how the principles of Laudato Si, Pope Francis’s encyclical on environmental stewardship, can be integrated into environmental science projects. He will discuss practical implementations and the significance of faith-based strategies in promoting ecological sustainability.
Nuclear Science and Technology in Coastal Resource Management
Raymond J. Sucgang will discuss the application of nuclear science and technology in the management and protection of coastal resources. He will showcase advancements in the field and demonstrate how these technologies can be leveraged to protect coastal ecosystems.
The Blue Economy Framework for Boracay Island
Rev. Fr. Jayvee Delos Santos will present the Blue Economy framework as applied to Boracay Island. His talk will cover the principles of the Blue Economy, emphasizing the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and healthy marine ecosystems.
Blue Economy Logical Framework Matrix Workshop
This workshop, facilitated by Raymond J. Sucgang and Rev. Fr. Jayvee Delos Santos, offers a hands-on experience in the Blue Economy Logical Framework Matrix. Participants will gain insights on designing, implementing, and evaluating projects within the Blue Economy framework.
Isotope Hydrology of the Nabaoy River System
Bryan Rey Sinel Solano will discuss the use of isotope hydrology in studying the Nabaoy River system. The session will cover methodologies and findings that enhance understanding of the river’s hydrological processes and water resource management.
Stakeholder Engagement and Policy Forum
Dr. Jimmy T. Masagca will lead a forum aimed at engaging stakeholders in biodiversity conservation efforts. This session will promote dialogue among policymakers, scientists, and community leaders to foster collaborative conservation strategies.
Biodiversity Conservation through Storytelling
Dr. Therese Jean Sarabia and Dr. Cicely Samar will explore the role of storytelling in biodiversity conservation. They will share methods and examples of how narratives can raise awareness, inspire action, and strengthen connections to nature.
Mangrove Conservation in Catanduanes through Storytelling
Dr. Jennifer Berces will focus on the ecological importance of mangroves in Catanduanes. Her presentation will highlight how storytelling can engage communities in the preservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems.
The convention will also serve as a platform for launching the new Wetlands Management Collaboration among universities and NGOs in Catanduanes, Aklan, and Legaspi City, promoting future biodiversity conservation efforts.
