Kalibo, Aklan- The Department of Information, Communications and Technology in Aklan (DICT-Aklan) has allocated some 5,000 free Buanihan Sim Cards in poor communities here.

DICT–Aklan Provincial Officer Marvin Manuel told the Boracay Island News Network (BINN) that the sim cards were distributed to several marginalized communities in Nabas and Altavas, Aklan on separate occasions.’

Manuel said the project aligns with the government’s efforts to expand internet access to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) under the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act (Republic Act No. 10929).

Each sim card has an allocation of free 25 gigabytes each month for a year. The sim card can be used for blended learning and can be used within the province of Aklan through geo-fencing.

The distribution is done with coordination with the Department of Education.

“I asked the teachers, parents and their learners to maximize the use of the data allocation as it is only consumable each month,” Manuel said during the distribution ceremony at Lumaynay Elementary School in Altavas February 3.
The selling of sim cards is also strictly prohibited. The sim cards provided are reloadable.
