Bridge construction poses a severe ecological threat to Boracayโs fragile sandbar. Each column installation excavates roughly 800 metric tons of sediment. This causes massive siltation that actively degrades nearby marine sanctuaries, mangrove parks, and shorelines.

The bridge site is a vital fish migration corridor and breeding ground that sustains local fisherfolk. The decades-old boat transport system provides livelihoods with dignity, while many other sectorsโincluding transport operators, cargo handlers, and vendorsโrisk being displaced by San Miguel’s project.

It violates the provisions on the Local Code of the Philippines for not complying the with consultation requirement and the endorsement of the Local Government Unit outside the failure to present a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment.

Under San Miguelโs business plans, Boracay becomes the main selling point while receiving little or zero in return. Economic activities are structured to take place primarily within SMC-owned properties on the mainland, limiting the benefits that flow back to the island and its communities.
