KALIBO, Aklan- The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Kalibo unanimously passed a resolution expressing profound sympathy and condolences on the passing of Juan “Johnny” P. Dayang, a respected media leader, former Mayor of Kalibo, and proud Kalibonhon.
The resolution, authored by SB Member Matt Aaron Peren Guzman, was presented and approved during the 18th Special Session of the Kalibo Sangguniang Bayan held on May 2, 2025. Dayang was remembered for his outstanding contributions to public service and media.
As Mayor of Kalibo, he led during a crucial period and was widely praised for his integrity and dedication.
Nationally, he rose to prominence as the long-time chairman emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), where he became a strong advocate for the community press and ethical journalism. In the resolution, the SB cited Dayang’s unwavering support for press freedom, his mentorship of countless journalists, and his efforts to elevate Aklan’s profile on both national and international stages.
His kindness, humility, and steadfast pride in his Aklanon heritage were highlighted as qualities that endeared him to colleagues, friends, and constituents. The passing of Dayang is a profound loss not only to his family and friends but also to the entire Municipality of Kalibo and the Philippine journalism community.
The SB formally presented the resolution to his children during the Necrological Service held that afternoon at the Ground Floor Lobby of the New Municipal Building, as a gesture of the municipality’s respect and gratitude for his life and legacy.
Dayang’s leadership in both government and media has left a lasting impact across the country, where he stood as a staunch defender of truth and a champion of media voices.
