KALIBO, Aklan,- The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)โ€“Aklan is conducting the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in selected households across the province to generate reliable data on tobacco use, related behaviors, and tobacco control measures in the Philippines.

A total of 391 households across 24 barangays or enumeration areas have been selected for the survey, covering household members aged 15 years and older.

The survey gathers information on the use of smoked and smokeless tobacco products, attempts to quit or reduce tobacco consumption, and respondentsโ€™ knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions regarding tobacco use.

According to Dr. Peter S. Mangilog, OIC-Chief Statistical Specialist of PSAโ€“Aklan, GATS is conducted every five years as part of the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS). The data generated will serve as an important basis for evidence-based policymaking and the development of health programs and tobacco control interventions.

Results of the 2021 GATS showed that 19.5 percent, or approximately 15.1 million Filipino adults, were current tobacco users. Prevalence was higher among men (34.7%) than women (4.2%).

Despite this, tobacco use among Filipino adults declined from 23.8 percent in 2015 to 19.5 percent in 2021, reflecting an 18.1 percent relative decrease.

Reliable data. Informed decisions. Healthier communities.
