Faith and Finance: The Lenten Tug-of-War

By Guillermo Sumbiling

As the heat of the Philippine summer intensifies, Holy Week marks a collision between deep-seated devotion and harsh global realities. This year, the solemnity of the Lenten season is framed by a volatile Middle Eastern conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. For the Filipino family, the impact is felt not in the headlines, but at the fuel pump, where prices have nearly doubled, transforming the annual trek to the provinces into a luxury.

In Aklan, the economic landscape is particularly unique. While the high cost of gasoline has forced many to trim their travel budgets, it hasn’t deterred a massive surge of local tourists. Boracay is seeing an influx of visitors opting for extended stays over the long weekend. For these travelers, the logic is simple: if the cost of getting there has doubled, one might as well stay longer to justify the expense. This “revenge travel” provides a vital boost to the local hospitality sector, even as families elsewhere sacrifice traditional outings to maintain their religious observances.

Compounding this complex economic picture is the surging US dollar, now hovering at the P60 mark. For the thousands of Aklanon families reliant on remittances from OFWs, this exchange rate is a double-edged sword. While it provides more pesos for daily essentials and helps offset the staggering inflation in fuel and food, it also signals a weakening local purchasing power that threatens long-term stability.

Ultimately, Holy Week remains the ultimate test of Filipino resilience. Whether through the quiet veneration of the Passion in local parishes or the bustling energy of a crowded Boracay beach, the culture of family remains the priority. We find ourselves in a period of “modern penance,” navigating a world where the cost of living rises daily, yet the value of our traditions remains unshakable.
