To our honored guests, awardees, the hardworking people behind this event, and everyone who made the 5th Lagerwey Awards possible, good morning.
Today, we come together to celebrate the best in development communication. But we also face a big challenge. The world is full of struggles that test our commitment to truth, justice, and peace. The world of media is always changingโbringing both great opportunities and big risks. Journalists and media workers who seek the truth often face threats, intimidation, and violence.
The fight for justice for those journalists who have been killed or threatened continues in many parts of the world, including our own country. Yet, despite these dangers, the courage and dedication of our media community remain strong. Many media organizations work tirelessly to promote responsible, ethical, and safer journalism.
Their efforts to protect journalists and hold those who threaten or harm them accountable are crucial in maintaining a free and truthful press. It is important to note that, for the first time in 20 years, there were no journalist killings last year. This is a sign of hopeโshowing that protest and work for safety, accountability, and ethical standards are making a difference.
Our country’s ranking in the Press Freedom Index has also improved. These are clear signs that we are moving forward in defending a free, fair, and independent media. They remind us how important it is to keep fighting for a media landscape that respects truth and justice. The life and work of Fr. Lagerwey show us the power of communication in defending truth and justice. Even when faced with danger and imprisonment, he never gave up his belief that words can lift communities and change society.

His projectsโsuch as community radio and literacy programsโwere more than just work; they were acts of resistance. They gave marginalized people a voice and the power to speak out for peace and justice. As the world of communication continues to growโwith digital platforms, social media, and new technologyโwe face new challenges.
Misinformation and fake news spread faster than ever, and stories can be easily twisted. But it is our responsibilityโto all of us who use mediaโto stand for truth and uphold the highest standards of honesty. This is a never-ending fight. Itโs a fight for real peace, justice, and a society where everyone can belong and thrive. The Lagerwey Awards honor those who bravely use communication as a tool for empowerment and positive change.
Today, as we recognize our awardees, let us remember Fr. Lagerweyโs great legacyโto use every tool, every story, and every voice to uphold truth, justice, and peace.
Your work and bravery in working for social justice and democracy are priceless. To our awardees, this recognition is not the end. It is a call to do more, to inspire others, challenge injustice, and keep working for peace and fairness. The work is yours, and your voice matters.
Finally, I want to thank the CFA for your unwavering dedication to combining Christian values with communication. Your tireless work unites us and helps build a more just and peaceful society through honest and responsible communication. Congratulations to everyone, and mabuhay po tayong lahat!
