LTO VI Mourns for Petix Akean

Kalibo, Aklan- “Ultimate sacrifice.”

That was how Land Transportation Office Region VI (LTO-6) Regional Director Atty. Gaudioso P. Geduspan II described the death of moto vlogger and photographer Gerald Carel Roldan, popularly known online as “Petix Akean.”

Roldan was killed on Aug. 30 when another motorcycle collided head-on with his in Brgy. Pudiot, Tangalan, Aklan.

Director Geduspan, accompanied by LTO Kalibo District Office Chief Engr. Marlon Velez and Atty. Seymour Pulvera, visited Roldan’s wake to condole with his family.

The LTO-6 Chief described Roldan as a road safety advocate from Kalibo, Aklan, who used his online platform to promote road discipline and driver education.

“He is a road safety advocate based in Kalibo, Aklan,” Director Geduspan said, recalling Roldan’s involvement in road safety advocacy and his support for LTO campaigns.

But Roldan’s death, he said, underscored the very danger the young content creator had been warning other motorists about.

“Another rider coming from the opposite direction, riding a big bike at very high speed, overshot his lane and directly collided with Mr. Roldan,” Director Geduspan said.

“Ultimate sacrifice for a road safety advocate to lose his life promoting road discipline and helping LTO weed out undisciplined and kamote riders,” he added.

The rider identified as 24-year-old Maynard Engaling is facing a 90-day preventive suspension of his driver’s license as the administrative case arising from the crash proceeds.

In a one-page order, Director Geduspan directed Engaling to immediately surrender his driver’s license to the LTO-6 Intelligence and Investigation Unit (IIU).

“This is to ensure the safety of the public and to prevent the possibility of similar incidents occurring while this administrative case is pending,” the order stated.

But the IIU investigators are also looking into the other riders who were reportedly with Engaling at the time of the incident.

The LTO-6 IIU issued Show Cause Orders to several riders, directing them to explain their participation in the incident and why they should not be held administratively liable for reckless driving.

CCTV footage showed the group overtaking vehicles at high speed and crossing into the opposite lane shortly before Engaling’s motorcycle collided with Roldan.

Director Geduspan had also confirmed that four to five other riders who were allegedly with Engaling could also face preventive suspension once their identities are confirmed and their individual roles in the incident are established.

Those who received Show Cause Orders have five days from receipt to submit their explanations and answer the allegations against them.
