MALAY, Aklan- PetroWind Energy Inc. (PWEI) has commenced expansion of Phase 2 of the Nabas Wind Power Project in Nabas-Malay, Aklan, which will increase its energy production capacity from 36MW to 50MW.
The expansion project started in March 2023 and will add six wind turbine generators alongside the existing 18 of Phase 1, thus fulfilling its commitment to supply clean and renewable energy to the Visayas grid. Prior to the construction of Phase 2, PWEI secured all necessary permits from the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other national regulatory agencies. The project was also given a green light by its host Barangays and local government units through endorsements and clearances.
“The commencement of this project underscores our commitment to help address the growing demand for power in the Visayas grid while fostering sustainable development in the countryside and long-term partnerships with our stakeholders,” said Yrel Ventura, Senior Manager for Environment and Community Relations Manager of PGEC.
As part of its sustainability framework, PWEI implements a proactive four-pronged environmental program aimed at managing its impact to the environment and communities. The holistic program involves site rehabilitation and protection, compliance with regulatory agencies, establishment of monitoring mechanisms, and annual environmental activities with host communities. PWEI, in partnership with the DENR, adopts a 41-hectare forest plantation and was able to plant ~50,000 seedlings through its annual Dagyaw Para sa Kagueangan tree-planting activity with host communities.
PWEI has also invested over Php 175 million in bioengineering solutions for its ridge-to-river rehabilitation program. These efforts were recognized by DENR in 2016, though a letter of commendation citing PWEI’s mitigation measures as model for other project developers in Aklan. Together with the DENR, Protected Area Management Bureau (PAMB), and other stakeholders, PWEI also conducts thorough and regular environmental monitoring.
PWEI has further demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of its host communities by implementing health, education, and livelihood programs under the banner We Power H.E.L.P. (Health, Education, Livelihood Program). In 2020, PWEI was recognized as one of the Top Community Care Companies in the 2020 Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES) by Malaysia-based MORS Group.
