Misamis Occidental- The bid to elevate Northwestern Mindanao State College (NMSC) into a university gained new momentum as CHED Commissioner Desiderio “Bong” Apag III met with Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal on saturday. Despite it being a weekend, both officials remained focused on their commitment to advancing higher education in the province.
The high-level discussion, joined by Provincial Administrator Ronald Ryan Cui, NMSC President Nelson Cabral, and Vice President for Administration and Finance and Board Secretary Kris Mae Balorio Lagang, tackled the next steps in securing NMSC’s university status. Commissioner Apag reaffirmed CHED’s support in expediting the process, citing the institution’s growing significance in producing skilled graduates and fostering regional development.
For years, Gov. Oaminal has been a leading force behind this initiative, seeing the transformation of NMSC into a university as a key driver for Misamis Occidental’s educational and economic progress. “This is a dream we have long pursued—not just for the institution, but for every Misamisnon striving for a brighter future,” he emphasized.
Elevating NMSC into a university is expected to bring enhanced academic programs, increased research funding, and more opportunities for students and faculty. With CHED and the provincial leadership working hand in hand, Misamis Occidental is closer than ever to achieving this milestone in education.
