KALIBO, Aklan- Ube, the beloved purple yam of the Philippines, is more than just a cultural icon on our tables—it is a high-value crop with the power to transform local agriculture. With its distinct color, flavor, and versatility, ube has become a global sensation, driving demand for everything from traditional Filipino kakanin to cakes, beverages, and export-ready products. Yet local production struggles to keep up, leaving a gap that synthetic substitutes abroad are already trying to fill.

Aklan is uniquely positioned to answer this demand. Ube grows best in hilly, well-drained lands with cool temperatures, forest cover, and rich organic soil—precisely the natural terrain of upland towns like Balete, Malinao, Libacao, Madalag, Ibajay, and Tangalan. By cultivating ube in these areas, we can provide farmers with a sustainable livelihood while preserving the environment.

This crop can also serve as an alternative to the destructive kaingin (slash-and-burn) culture in the uplands, where cassava is often planted after forest clearing. Unlike cassava, which can deplete soil health, ube thrives in organic-rich land and encourages soil conservation. Promoting ube not only creates new income streams but also supports environmental rehabilitation, aligning with sustainable farming goals.

Still, challenges remain. Propagation techniques, seed supply, and farmer training must be strengthened through the support of state universities, agricultural experts, and government programs. If given the right investment, Aklan can lead the purple revolution—turning upland kaingin into sustainable farms and making the golden purple crop a crown jewel of our agricultural future.
