Buruanga, Aklan- Computer science interns of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Aklan bridge the gap between classroom theory and community innovation, introducing a technology-driven solution that would support tourism management in Buruanga through science and digital transformation.

DOST Aklan recognizes the contributions of its four (4) student interns from Aklan State University (ASU) – Ibajay Campus, who developed the Integrated Tourist Management System for Barangay Bel-is, Buruanga, Aklan.

Barangay Bel-is in Buruanga, Aklan, is one of the local tourist destinations in the province that houses different resorts that offer various water activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking while enjoying the crystal-clear water and white sand beach.

The interns, as a team, introduced an integrated web-based platform designed to modernize the monitoring of tourist arrivals while also promoting the destination online. The system enables the local tourism personnel and barangay officials to organize visitor information efficiently and generate data that may assist in tourism planning, event preparation, and resource management.

Developed under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) project, titled “Empowering Barangay Bel-is thru Science and Technology toward Sustainable Tourism Development (Project Bel-CEST), the platform serves as an online tourist portal showcasing the attractions and services available in the barangay. Moreover, a virtual tour component and a tourism circuit are currently being developed in coordination with the Bel-is Barangay Council and the Local Government Unit of Buruanga.

The team’s presentation highlighted the importance of integrating digital innovation into local tourism development, especially for emerging destinations seeking more sustainable and organized tourism systems. The team also discussed the long-term sustainability of the platform, including maintenance and continuous content development.

DOST Aklan fully supports initiatives that empower communities through science, technology, and innovation (STI) while also encouraging student participation in real-life development projects. The initiative reflects the continuing commitment of the DOST Aklan and its partner institutions to harness STI in strengthening local tourism, improving community-based initiatives, and promoting sustainable development in the province.
