KALIBO, Aklan — Aklan is strengthening its creative industries and innovation ecosystem through investments in technology, research, entrepreneurship and cultural heritage, positioning the province to contribute to the Philippines’ vision of becoming Asia’s premier creative hub by 2030.

Manuel ‘Nong’ Rangasa, a creative industeies advocate said among the province’s key initiatives is the establishment of the Aklan Innovators Hub Fabrication Laboratory, an ₱18.5-million facility launched in June 2025 through the partnership of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Provincial Government of Aklan and Aklan State University (ASU). The facility provides a space for researchers, inventors, students and startups to develop ideas into tangible products and help local micro, small and medium enterprises improve their competitiveness.

Aklan is also developing its technology startup ecosystem through TechNest Aklan, the province’s first information and communications technology-focused Technology Business Incubator. Supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and ASU, the initiative aims to help emerging entrepreneurs develop innovative ideas, commercialize research outputs and establish technology-based business.

The province’s cultural heritage is
likewise emerging as an important part of its innovation agenda. During the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week held in Kalibo from October 1 to 3, government agencies and industry partners highlighted efforts to modernize piña textile production, advance natural dye research and introduce digital tools for identifying textile fibers. These initiatives seek to preserve traditional craftsmanship while opening new opportunities for local artisans and creative enterprises.

The challenge ahead is to sustain these initiatives through stronger collaboration among government, academe, businesses, investors and creative professionals. By expanding access to technology, developing local talent, protecting intellectual property and helping homegrown products reach wider markets, Aklan can strengthen its role in the country’s creative economy and work toward becoming a more competitive center for creativity and innovation by 2030.
